About LOPES

LOPES is a pioneering experiment for the detection of cosmic rays with radio antennas. Particle cascades initiated in the atmosphere by cosmic rays, so-called extensive air showers, emit nanosecond-short pulses of radio emission. With LOPES, these radio pulses are detected in the frequency range from 40 to 80 MHz. From such measurements, the arrival direction, the energy, and to a certain extent also the type of the primary cosmic ray can then be inferred. Direct comparisons of the LOPES measurements with the particle detector experiment KASCADE-Grande allow us a particularly precise study of the radio emission physics.

LOPES is in its final phase and has made very important contributions to the study of radio emission from extensive air showers. Many of the techniques developed and evaluated in LOPES (digital interferometric analysis, Monte Carlo simulation of the emission physics, ...) constitute the foundation for the application of radio detection techniques on large scales, which are currently being researched in the framework of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Contributions by the ETP

The ETP makes central contributions to the design, setup and operation of the LOPES-experiment. At the same time, it is strongly involved in the analysis of LOPES data and the simulation of the radio emission physics.
